With a cause in mind
The Bearcats volleyball teams will be looking to make a difference with a cause in mind when they take on the VIU Mariners this weekend.
When the 'Cats hit the floor this Friday, all proceeds from gate admission will be donated to MCC. Individuals will also have an opportunity to donate to the Mennonite Central Committee Haiti Relief Fund.
"It's overwhelming to see what has happened in Haiti and our goal is to help out financially and raise awareness of the devastation," commented Director of Athletics Rocky Olfert. "This is an opportunity for our CBC and surrounding communities to work together."
MCC sent out this press release update on January 15:
Updates
- The Canadian government is matching donations. MCC is eligible for these matching funds which essentially double the value of a donation. The match will apply to donations made by individual Canadians from January 12 to February 12, 2010.
- MCC anticipates a multi-million dollar response over a number of years, focusing on rebuilding.
- 1,000 water filters have been purchased and are awaiting shipment to Haiti. Drinking water will be a significant issue given the collapse of water collection systems.
At MCC in British Columbia, donations have been pouring in, reflecting the concern that people feel for those living the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
“We continue to pray for the people of Haiti and for our staff who are obviously working in horrible conditions but doing whatever they can to make a difference,” said Phil Schafran, Director for Resource Development for MCC BC. “We are grateful for a generous and giving community who have and continue to respond to this terrible disaster.”
